When Bob "Bull" Watson was hired as general manager of the New York
Yankees in 1996, his orders were to give the club a title it had not
had since 1977 and 1978 World Series Champions -- to do it as soon as
possible, preferably that same year.
Watson survived that pressure just as he survived his bout with cancer
and his difficult climb out of the minor leagues in the racially
